Vintage Verlander Keys Blues' Win Over Braves; Rooker Homers Twice as Marauders Mug Marlins
August 13, 2024
The San Diego Braves pitchers essentially took the day off at PETCO Park as the incredible New Orleans Blues offense erupted for 9 runs while Justin Verlander(12-8), with relief help from Carl Edwards Jr, contained San Diego.
Juan Soto was a seemingly constant irritant to the hometown fans as he provided much of the offense for the visitors. He laced a one-base hit which plated a run in the 5th inning and blasted a two-run home run in the 8th inning. New Orleans had only 6 hits for the night.
Paul Blackburn(6-9) was charged with the loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 5 runs in 4 and 1/3 innings.
Right fielder Brent Rooker ripped 2 homeruns and scored 3 times at Marauders Park as the Memphis Marauders beat the Miami Marlins 7 to 4.
Rooker had a big evening at the plate. He ripped a solo home run in the 3rd inning and delivered a solo blast in the 7th inning. Miami tried unsuccessfully to come back in the 9th.
Clayton Kershaw(8-8) got the win allowing no runs in 5 and 1/3 innings. The loss was charged to Bryce Elder(7-9). He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 11 hits and 6 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.
'You have to give Miami credit, they fought us tough to the end' Joe Rudi said. 'It could have gone either way, but I'm glad we pulled out the victory.'
