O'Neill, Duran Power Highlanders into the UBA Championship Series
October 21, 2024
New York (UBAN) - Designated hitter Tyler O'Neill slammed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI and Spencer Strider mowed down 11 Pittsburgh batters as the New York Highlanders outscored the Pittsburgh Alleghenys 5 to 3 to earn the franchise's fourth Eastern Conference Pennant.
O'Neill enjoyed a fine day at the plate. He smashed a two-run homer in the 2nd inning and then added a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth right after a two-run homer in that inning by Ezequiel Duran pushed the Highlanders into the lead. Pittsburgh went down without a fight in the 9th.
The victory was credited to Strider(3-0) who went 7 innings, allowing 3 runs. Strider got help from Sam Moll who was credited with his 1st save. Bailey Ober(1-1) was the losing pitcher.
Bud Abbott was upset after the game. 'I don't like to complain but did you see that umpires strike zone?', he said. 'Maybe they ought to start calling the strike zone the way it's printed in the rule book. But, I wish the Highlanders well in the finals.'
The Highlanders will now wait to play the winner of the Chicago - Mexico City series. The UBA Championship Series will open in New York either Wednesday or Thursday depending on the outcome of Game 6 of the WCCS later this evening.
